500 Words — Day Forty-Four: Starting Up

The last four days have been a busy start to this next stage in my life. I had my last day at the old job on Friday, moved into my new apartment on Saturday, did some last minute shopping and oil change on Sunday, started the new job and made a grocery run on Monday, and here I am today finally having an internet connection in my new apartment to allow me to start writing today. It’s been really crazy. Throw in the fact that I work up this morning at 5:30 so I could get a run in and still get to the office by 8:00 AM. So, managing time is going to be more important than ever now that I have to manage everything by myself (thank you parents for the support thus far) while trying to really get a strong start at my new job.

Starting at a new job is really something. There’s nothing like going from the feeling that you know almost everything to the feeling that you know nothing and then trying to build and solidify from there. The good news is that things are starting to click after two days and I’m starting to get a better picture of what is going on overall. Things are a little chaotic and unstructured, but I knew that would be the case going in. Hopefully, as I get more comfortable with all of the responsibilities and the full scope that my position entails, I’ll be able to contribute some of the structure and organization that I found useful in my prior position. Again, even though the last position didn’t yield the result I wanted, there was still plenty of useful experience that I can apply to the position ahead.

Outside of the new job, I’m trying to organize my life and find a routine that jives with the current schedule. Sleep is going to be vitally important if I want to continue hitting both my physical and mental goals, so I need to be more careful than ever with that since that was something I let get out of hand nearing the end of my last position. I think that waking up at 5:30 AM might become a regular thing, so it looks like I’ll need to get to bed even earlier. The good news is, however, that Columbus looks gorgeous all lit up early in morning along the Scioto River. Pretty sick view to wake up to every morning after a few minutes into the run.

The future looks bright though as do most new beginnings. However, with this one I’m looking to build off the mistakes of the past and use those as a launching pad into the future. There will be ups and downs and there’s a ton of hard work ahead, but the theme of this year is to really push into the person that I want to be rather than the person I’m comfortable with. And I haven’t done the best job of that, but I have put the effort in and am getting something out of it. So we’ll see if there are more rewards to follow…
